In this promo for the 2014-15 season, we wanted to impart a huge amount of information in a very short time. Sarah Mohr-Pietsch presents from the Barbican, with help from Sakari Oramo, Niel Brand and Paul Hughes. Using a mixture of 2D graphics and moving musical manuscripts we were able to keep the film visually interesting without slowing the pace.
BBC Proms 2013
The BBC commissioned us to make a short film to promote the Proms. We were fantastically lucky to get interviews with Samira Ahmed, Jenny Agutter and the admirable David Attenborough. We also had access to the BBC's own archive of past Proms to plunder. The idea was to use previous performances to whet the audience’s appetite and to highlight the thrill of being there. The film did very well, getting over 70,000 hits on YouTube (the previous year’s got under 7000).
BBC Proms 2014
In our second season launch for the BBC, Alison Balsom, Joshua Bell, Sakari Oramo, Laura Mvula and Roderick Willams tell us what its like to perform at the proms – while stars and punters alike talk about the intimacy, the shared experience and the thrills of the greatest classical music festival in the world.
We used steadicam extensively to approach and enter the Royal Albert Hall, giving the viewer an idea of what its like to go to the Proms.
BBC Concert Orchestra
Following our success with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, we were commissioned to produce a promo for the BBC Concert Orchestra. The style was to be very different, as it covers what used to be called ‘light’ music, so we came up with the idea of a mocked-up broadcast from Radio 2 favourite Ken Bruce. We also produced some original visuals to set the scene for the performances, as uniquely the orchestra lends itself to many themed broadcasts, and live events. This all-purpose promo needed to cover a lot of ground. We really enjoyed producing the visuals and Ken was an absolute hoot!
LSO Donatella Flick
Every two years Donatella Flick and the London Symphony Orchestra run a three day competition to discover the conducting stars of tomorrow. Sir Antonio Pappano gives great insight into what it takes to be a conductor, and a past winner describes her journey. Shot and edited during the competition, then shown on the last night at the Barbican, our crew of two had their work cut out making this film. Clips of Tony were rushed out to promote the final while the competition ran. This is one of our first outings with the Canon C300 Mark 2, enabling low light, slo-mo and autofocus, amazing!
Wez the Drummer Whole Lotta Drums
Wez is a fantastic teacher and performer. He wanted to produce a video showing how John Bonham may have recorded, using vintage drums and mics. The drumming in the film is all one take, no tricks… roll over Bird Man!
